Thumbs-Up, Thumbs-Down – January 17

Welcome to the club

Thumbs up to Trinity Lutheran High School junior Sydney Jaynes, who recently became the second girls basketball player to score 1,000 points in the history of the school’s program, and thumbs up to Brownstown Central High School senior Ashley Schroer, who became the sixth girl to score more than 1,000 points in the history of that school’s program.

Extra encouragement

Thumbs up to Bible study leader Sandee Ramsey and youth leader Keia Blair, who teamed up last year to create the Adopt a Youth program at Seymour Christian Church. The program is designed to help youth, especially ones in high school, realize there are other people besides their families, friends and neighbors who really care for them by providing them with words of encouragement or a small gift throughout the year.

That’s a wrap

Thumbs up to everyone who contributed to a community food drive conducted by Healthy Jackson County during the holiday season. That drive received 1,465 pounds of food, which was shared with Anchor House Family Assistance Center and Pantry, Community Provisions of Jackson County and Seymour Christian Church, all in Seymour; Brownstown Church of the Nazarene and Shed for You, both in Brownstown; and Medora Christian Church.

Supportive

Thumbs up to those who supported the George Junior Republic’s sixth annual Christmas party for the nonprofit agency’s older youth clients in foster care and their families. About 100 kids attended the party Dec. 12 at The Point in Seymour. The party is funded through donations, including catering from Caleb Blackerby and Blackerby’s Hangar 5 Restaurant and First Class Catering in Columbus and disc jockey services provided by Matt Ortega. Each child received gifts purchased specifically for them from their Christmas wish list thanks to the continued support of sponsors, including Precision Tools Service, Kristin Cummins and Switchyard Restaurant and Brewery and Tim Emmert of Studio Shag.

Picking up the tab

Thumbs up to Hilex Poly, a plastic film manufacturer and recycler, for picking up the tab for 1,400 Jennings County High School students to attend home athletic events this winter.
