To the editor:

This year’s Christmas Basket Fund was once again a success. Seymour American Legion Post 89 received more than 270 requests for assistance and was able to provide more than 240 families with gift cards for a holiday meal.

This is a testament to the generosity and benevolence of the people, organizations and businesses of Seymour and Jackson County.

Our thanks go out to, not only those who donated, but The Tribune and Jackson County Bank and their staff and employees that gave their time and effort to make this year’s program succeed.

The final amount collected was $11,430, which assures that the program will continue next year. I don’t imagine the World War II veterans that started this program visualized it continuing for 75 years, but thanks to donors, it will.

Those who give and continue to give, can be assured that all proceeds are used to purchase and mail $50 gift cards to those who request assistance. None of the funds are used elsewhere.

There are many other programs throughout the city and county since this program was founded that also provide much needed assistance and we feel grateful that so many out there continue to believe in our program with their donations.

Thank you all.

Jim Tracey,

American Legion Post 89 finance officer
