First slate of games in the New Year

0

The calendar may have just turned over into the New Year, but Jackson County hoops are still the same heading into the final two months of the season.

Just a few games this weekend as we break into January. Here’s what’s on tap this weekend, starting with girls basketball games.

Brownstown Central at New Albany, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

The Braves have had a full week to get ready for their second test against their second Class 4A opponent of the season.

Brownstown Central lost their only challenge to a team in a class above them earlier this year, falling to Columbus East 59-53 in a game coach Brandon Allman says his girls just didn’t shoot the ball well.

The Bulldogs are weathering a tough stretch of the season after dropping five games in the month of December. They might be hopeful of picking off the Braves at home, but the Braves’ defensive and scoring talent should be too tough for the Bulldogs to handle.

This will be the third opponent from the Hoosier Hills Conference the Braves have played this year. So far, they’re 1-1 and have games against Madison and Jennings County remaining. While the Braves are chasing a Mid-Southern Conference record, a good showing against another league is never anything to overlook.

Seymour at Rushville, Saturday, 7:30 p.m.

After a good couple of days at the East Central Tournament, the Owls get right back to work on the road to face the Lions.

The Owls have had a very good record against Rushville since 2010, winning six of the last seven meetings. The Lions’ lone win in the last decade came in 2017 when they grounded the Owls by three points in Rushville.

Seymour has started to catch fire a little bit and has been in plenty of close games this season. The Owls also are starting to get valuable minutes off their bench, which should provide some needed rest to their starters that account for the lion’s share of the offensive production.

New Washington at Trinity Lutheran, Saturday, 7:30 p.m.

It has been a little while since the Trinity Lutheran Cougars have been at home. Their last home game was Dec. 12 against Christian Academy, a game they won 62-17.

The Cougars welcome in a Mustangs team that has been off since Dec. 21 and is hoping to rebound from four straight losses.

Trinity, however, will be looking to continue its winning ways and stay near the top of the Class A rankings.

Stopping the Cougars is tough, but trying to score on them is even tougher. They have yet to allow 60 points this season.

Now onto the boys’ games.

Crothersville at Henryville Tournament, Friday, 11:45 a.m.

The Tigers will hopefully bounce back from a couple of losses in their last three games against a tough Providence Cristo Rey team that has already logged seven wins this season.

Crothersville’s three losses this year have all been by seven points or fewer, and they’re not a team to take lightly. They possess all of the needed tools to win the four-team Henryville Tournament with their speed, length and size.

Dependent on the outcome, the Tigers will tussle at 6 p.m. or 7:45 p.m. in the night game. They’ll battle either Heritage Christian or the host Hornets, who play in the first game at 10 a.m.

Seymour at Martinsville, Saturday, 7:30 p.m.

Things are finally starting to fall Seymour’s way.

After dropping five straight games, including three by four points or fewer in overtime, the Owls have split their last two games. The downed Jennings County but then fell to Whiteland to end 2019.

The Artesians haven’t been off to the best start, either, and are hoping to swing things their way, as well. They may see the Owls as opportunity to turn their season around, but the Owls have been wearing down teams with their defense and are finding the needed offense to put teams away.
