Busy weekend for county teams

0

The holidays are upon us and while most will be staying home or visiting family, a handful of Jackson County teams will be heading out into the cold for some hoops action.

Here’s a look at the holiday basketball tournaments happening this weekend.

Toby Yoho Classic at Eastern Greene

Brownstown Central and Trinity Lutheran girls basketball teams take part in this tournament that takes place at both Eastern Greene High School and Eastern Greene Elementary.

The Braves and Cougars play at 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. and will split their time at both locations.

BC battles North Daviess first at the high school while Trinity takes on Clay City at the elementary school. They’ll flip flop locations for the late afternoon game as the Braves take on the host Thunderbirds and the Cougars face Owen Valley.

The Braves are off to a great start and their two opponents to start this tournament combine for a losing record. The Cougars are also off to an equally impressive start and face two teams desperate to get a few games in the win column.

Should the teams win out, they’d face each other again in the championship game on Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. The Braves won the first meeting between these teams on Nov. 19, 55-45.

East Central Tournament

After a really tough few weeks, the Owls travel East Central for an even tougher two-day tournament.

The Owls face Shelbyville in their first game on Friday at 2 p.m. and, if they come out like they did against Floyd Central, should win it. They’ll take on a Hamilton Heights at 5:30 p.m. and their record doesn’t do the team any justice.

With games against Danville, Brownsburg, Noblesville and Fishers already played, the Huskies are much better than their 5-6 record indicates.

Seymour faces the host Trojans early Saturday morning and will play their final game at a time to be determined time Saturday afternoon.

Crothersville Tournament

Tiger girls basketball fans won’t have to travel far to see their team on Saturday.

Crothersville faces Indianapolis Scecina at 10 a.m. to start the day and the Crusaders are off to a tough start having only posted wins against Indianapolis Herron and Indianapolis Washington.

The Tigers would face either Morristown or Rising Sun in the second game of the day dependent on the result of the first. The Shiners have yet to win a game this year and the Yellow Jackets are off to a slow start.

Edinburgh Tournament

The Cougars’ boys basketball team will face the Indianapolis Lutheran Saints for the first of two times in the month of December.

The Saints are breaking in a new coach and are off to a bit of a slow start. Trinity is also struggling to find wins, but could nab a win over Indy Lutheran if their defense shows up to slow down the Saints.

Depending on the result, the Cougars will face either Edinburgh or Jac-Cen-Del at 6 p.m. Both teams have a combined .500 record.

North Daviess Tournament

The Braves took one on the chin on Monday night against Class A No. 2 Barr-Reeve.

The Vikings have the second-best defensive average in the state, holding teams to just under 30 points a game.

It’s one of the tougher starts to a Braves’ basketball season under coach Dave Benter, but they’ll look to rebound against a Southridge team that is also struggling to find wins this season.
