Rising to the top

Thumbs up to the Arc of Jackson County 2019 award winners recognized during the annual awards banquet on the night of Nov. 14 at the Knights of Columbus in downtown Seymour. They were Kevin Trotter, Anne Baxter Award; Deb Schwartz, Educator of the Year Award; Boys and Girls Club of Seymour, Community Service Award; Eurest Dining Services, Employer of the Year Award; and Jonathan Graves, Melvin Maynard Award.

Seeing is believing

Thumbs up to members of the Seymour Noon, Brownstown and Medora Community Lions Club members who assisted with vision screenings at local schools. More than 3,000 students were screened and the Lions volunteered 500-plus hours for this project. For several years, the Lions have provided vision screenings for all public and private schools at no cost.

Boot camp graduate

Thumbs up to Private Braydon J. Fish of Brownstown who graduated from the U.S. Marine Corps boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego on Nov. 15. Fish, a 2019 graduate of Brownstown Central High School, is the son of Cindy (Aaron) Fish and Brandon (Lindsay) Fish.

Quitters

Thumbs up to those smokers — locally and across the state and country — who decided to quit smoking Thursday as part of the annual Great American Smokeout. Smoking tobacco is a top contributor to a host of health conditions, many of which can be prevented, according to a news release from Schneck Medical Center in Seymour. The nationwide effort takes place on the third Thursday of every November.

Naval nominee

Thumbs up to Luke Turner, a senior at Seymour High School, who recently was nominated to the United States Naval Academy by U.S. Senator Todd Young, R-Indiana. A nomination does not guarantee admission to a service academy, but is required to be considered, and nominees are chosen based on personal merit. Good luck Luke.

No Shave November

Thumbs up to the nine Brownstown Central Community School Corp. staff members who decided to keep their facial hair this month to benefit Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis. The contestants participating in No Shave November are Principal Joe Sheffer, Superintendent Tim Taylor, Director of Technology Will Hubbard, high school guidance counselor Derrick Koch and high school staff members Brandon Tormoehlen, Blake Hackman, Dan Schwartz, Mitchell Taylor and Dave Benter. The goal is to raise $4,000.
