A Seymour man faces four charges after police said he stole another man’s car while intoxicated and wrecked it.

Carlos Sebastain, 20, faces a Level 6 felony charge of auto theft after an incident reported to police around 2 a.m. Sunday. He also faces misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief, public intoxication and minor in consumption of alcohol.

Assistant Police Chief Craig Hayes said police were called around 2 a.m. Sunday to an apartment complex in the 600 block of East Oak Street.

Police said a man had dropped a friend off at the apartment and followed them inside. He told officers he heard the door slam on his Chevrolet Camaro.

"He stepped outside and recognized the male who drove off," Hayes said.

Sebastain hit a curb and left the parking lot of the complex before disappearing, police said.

A friend of the man whose vehicle was stolen later called and said he saw Sebastain running on foot into a field behind the complex. Police found Sebastain intoxicated in the field and took him into custody.

Officer Chris McCoy found the vehicle damaged and still running near Katherine Court.

"He had damaged the vehicle and decided to run back toward the complex," Hayes said.

He said the vehicle had a flat tire, and one of the rims was bent with parts broken off.

Officer Crystal Schapson led the investigation. Sebastain also had a warrant for his arrest from Jackson Superior Court, police said.

Sebastain was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 2:57 a.m Sunday. He is being held without bond pending his initial hearing.

A Level 6 felony is punishable between six months and two and a half years upon conviction. The advisory sentence is one year.
