A Seymour man faces felony charges of theft and burglary after stealing $9,000 worth of equipment from his former employer, police report.

Daniel Stone, 37, was arrested for burglary and theft, along with an outstanding Clark County warrant, on Saturday, according to a news release from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.

At 3:43 a.m. Oct. 21, Officer J.L. McElfresh responded to a report of a burglary at All Star Paving, 4320 N. U.S. 31, Seymour.

While speaking to a mechanic at the scene, McElfresh learned someone had entered the garage and taken tools, fuel and a plasma cutter. McElfresh wasn’t able to determine how entry was gained into the garage.

Officer Jordan Hawn responded to the scene to assist McElfresh with the initial investigation.

At 6:30 a.m., All Star Paving owner Kevin Heilman called McElfresh and advised him of video surveillance footage of two possible suspects.

Heilman told McElfresh that one of the suspects was a former employee, Stone. Heilman provided the last known address to McElfresh and a vehicle description.

On Oct. 23, McElfresh and Hawn went to that address but was unable to find him. A short time later, the homeowner called the sheriff’s department and said Stone had shown up at the residence but left on foot.

McElfresh requested the assistance of the Seymour Police Department in trying to locate Stone.

A short time later, Seymour Officer Kevin Settle and Detective Sgt. Greg O’Brien located Stone at the intersection of East Tipton Street and Holiday Square Road in Seymour.

Stone was taken into custody for an outstanding arrest warrant from Clark County.

McElfresh arrived and attempted to interview Stone, but he refused to answer questions or cooperate, police said.

On Saturday, Jackson County Detective Mark Holt responded to Columbus Pawn, where a stolen plasma cutter was recovered.

McElfresh had obtained information on the location of the plasma cutter on the previous night and requested Holt’s assistance in recovering it.

The investigation is ongoing, but a second suspect has been identified, and an arrest warrant has been issued for their arrest.
