Owls girls soccer reflects on successful year

Coach Greg Musser says he will have a lot of good memories from his 2019 Seymour girls soccer team.

At the top of the list is the nine members of the senior class who put together four straight double-digit win seasons.

“The seniors were 43-25-11 during their careers, and is the winningest class I’ve had since I’ve been here,” he said. "The Owls were 10-6-3 this season, including 4-2-1 in the Hoosier Hills Conference.

“The growth these girls had is amazing," he said. "We played six games against regional-qualifying teams. We gave up six goals in the conference and four of them were in one game."

Four of the seniors, Aidan Hiester, Kate Snook, Bailey Lykins and Mia Schrader, received special awards when the team was honored with a banquet at the high school Wednesday night.

Hiester was named team most valuable player, plus all-Hoosier Hills Conference first team, all-district second game, and was one of 12 Owls named academic all-state.

Musser said she meant a lot to the program.

“She cared about the girls," he said. "She was a tough player. She played better when she was agitated.”

Snook, the Owls’ starting goalie, was honored for setting a school record as she had nine shutouts this fall. She tied the school record her junior year with seven shutouts, and was named academic all-state.

Schrader, and sophomore Camryn Sterling, received most improved awards.

Lykins, along with Alyssa Perry, were named HHC all-conference honorable mention. Perry also received the Coaches Award. Both were academic all-state.

Mallory Moore was also named all-HHC first team, received the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association top team player award, and was academic all-state.

Musser announced Sydney Musgrave, Addison Chandler, Ellie Cornn, Paxton Heyne, Kylee Nowling, Elizabeth Hartman, and McKenzie Bailey were academic all-state. He said the girls had to have an accumulative GPA of 3.7 or higher and had to be a junior or senior to earn the honor.

Heyne was named the most valuable junior varsity player.

Bob Hartman, who was a member of Musser’s coaching staff for the past eight years, announced his resignation as a soccer coach.
