A 25-year-old Jennings County man died in a single-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon in a rural area in the northeastern part of that county, police report.

Craig Coons of North Vernon was ejected from the 2020 Kia Soul he was driving and pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on County Road 150E near County Road 650N, according to a report from Trooper Jacob Tolle with the Indiana State Police Versailles Post.

Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, the post’s public information officer, said the investigation into the wreck reported at 1:30 p.m. indicates Coons was driving north on County Road 150E when the vehicle left the east side of the road for an unknown reason, struck a utility pole, overturned and came to rest in the road.

Coons sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead by the Jennings County Coroner’s Office.

Wheeles said Coons was not properly restrained when the crash occurred, and it is not known if alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash.

Toxicology results are pending, and the incident remains under investigation.

State police were assisted by officers with the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department and personnel with Jennings County Emergency Medical Services, North Vernon Fire Department, Jennings County Coroner’s Office and Lucas Wrecker Service.
