Seymour City Council At-Large: Richard Meadors Q and A

What are your thoughts on annexation and TIF districts?

As a Libertarian, I do believe in consent, and therefore, annexation is a very unattractive part of government. I do not believe that any entity has the right to come in and seize your property, even if it is for public good. I believe a person should be able to decide for themselves without coercion on whether or not to sell. We also believe that at its core, "Taxation is theft." I personally believe that if people and businesses kept more of what they made, they would naturally invest in things that help them. In the example of business, why wouldn’t you want to make your area look nicer to attract more business?

Do you think the city needs to pursue solar energy? Why or why not?

Personally, I like the idea of exploring new energy opportunities; however, I am in favor of tax breaks for those who want to make the switch as opposed to taxpayers funding an experimental run.

What do you think the city needs to do to improve public safety?

Our public officials and first responders have a difficult job and deserve all of our gratitude for a thankless occupation. That said, we can do better as a community observing existing laws before we put new ones on the books. For example, I see far too many people wandering out into the streets against the lights or ignoring traffic and lane signs regarding left turns. Also, when it comes to the bigger issues facing our community, I think we need to do more to educate ourselves on the issues that people are facing. For instance, Libertarians are for personal freedom and the nonprosecution of victimless crimes. We think that addiction is better remedied with help, not the seizure of their property, the loss of their jobs or the incarceration of the individual. I also personally believe that we need to foster a better relationship between law enforcement and the city. We have a great town with wonderful people trying to protect it.

Are there any infrastructure (roads/sewer) projects you think the city needs to pursue?

There are always new projects that are needed in our town. I think listening to our residents could give us a clear picture on where we need to go on that. This is why it is imperative that we need to not only select the right people to serve, but we also need the entire community to show up to these meetings and voice their concerns and have their opinions heard in a public forum.

What improvements do you think need to be made to our parks?

We can certainly always improve our parks; however, like I stated before, I am not in favor of spending tax dollars on entertainment. I am just one person, but I believe that donations and sponsorships are a valuable tool in infrastructure, and then the people also have pride in something they chose to invest in.

Do you think any changes need to be made to the public transportation system?

As a person that works for a competitor, (full disclosure) I do not like the city government being in charge of a business in an industry that is required to pay city government a licensing fee to exist. Besides Libertarians’ disdain for licensing requirements, I personally do not like the idea of paying your competition to stay in business. I am in favor of encouraging private competition in this industry.

What ways do you feel the city should increase revenue and/or cut expenses?

Because we are against taxes, (who isn’t?) we are in favor of tightening the belt where we can find private, voluntary funding. We also believe in constant auditing of government agencies. We need to know where the money is going before it goes there. It takes accountability and responsibility, but I think we have a bright future ahead of us.
