Seymour City Council At-Large: Eric DiBlasi Jr. Q and A

0

What are your thoughts on annexation and TIF districts?

Annexation is a necessity as Seymour continues to grow. TIF districts are also a necessity that are used to attract new economic development, assist with infrastructure and education. We just need to make sure these funds continue to be used wisely with the community’s overall best interest in mind.

Do you think the city needs to pursue solar energy? Why or why not?

If it is feasible, absolutely. Energy costs will only increase, so if the savings outweigh the cost of the equipment and installation, this would be one way the city can save money.

What do you think the city needs to do to improve public safety?

Overall, I think Seymour still has the safe, small-town feeling, but like anywhere, we have our issues with crime. In 2020, there will be a new mayor and a new police chief. I hope they, along with council, will be able to look at how things have been done in the past and see if there are opportunities for improvement. Maybe more patrolling of areas that tend to consistently have issues would improve public safety.

Are there any infrastructure (roads/sewer) projects you think the city needs to pursue?

As a resident and having covered city council meetings, I know the Von Fange Ditch and West Second Street are prone to flooding. In recent years, the condition of these areas has been improved, and there is probably still room for improvement. I am aware of the sewer expansion along the southeast side of town, which will allow for more growth. This is an example of looking at both immediate and long-range infrastructure needs that will allow Seymour to grow.

What improvements do you think need to be made to our parks?

Seymour has great parks. I know they are utilized for ball tournaments, league sports and family reunions. One opportunity I see is to offer more programming within the parks, perhaps offer classes at our parks to get people out to enjoy these spaces. Part of the master plan, I believe, is to add more biking/walking lanes and paths throughout town, which would connect the parks. This would promote park usage.

Do you think any changes need to be made to the public transportation system?

I don’t have a definitive yes or no without fully evaluating the current system. However, there is a lot of foot traffic along Tipton Street, and I think some of the employment issues stem from lack of transportation. So I am sure there are some growth opportunities for this system, whether it is expanded routes, stops at major employers in town and/or adding hours and days this service is available. If it is not currently being utilized to full capacity, then I feel like the city will need to make sure it is.

What ways do you feel the city should increase revenue and/or cut expenses?

Annexation will help increase the city’s tax base but will also add to the city’s expenses to extend services to those areas. As opposed to cutting expenses, I think it’s more about spending within our means. Council and other city officials work together to review the budget, programs, salaries, etc. and evaluate whether they are the best use of tax dollars. If elected, I look forward to working with other elected officials on this issue.
