Cameron Cox meant a lot to the Seymour boys’ soccer team this fall.

That was the word from Coach Matt Dennis, who named Cox as the Owls’ most valuable player during the team’s awards program Tuesday night.

“He was a solid captain,” Dennis said. “All play went through him.”

Cox, a junior, was named the outstanding mid fielder, and was all-Hoosier Hills first team and was named a member of the academic all-state team.

Also named to the HHC first team was Carter Hendrix. Owen Chandler and Isaac Shafer.

Gabe Baker was named the most improved varsity player, Donovyn Thomas received the coaches’ award, Will Smith was named the outstanding defender. Simon Akers received the top attacker award.

Dennis said the Owls did not have the kind of season he or the players were expecting as they finished 3-10-4 overall and 2-3-2 in the HHC, which placed them fifth in the conference.

“For all of our loses there was a ton of growth,” Dennis said. “We faced three teams that were sectional champions.” He said 11 different players scored a goal or had an assist.

Other players who earned academic all-state honors were Akers, Shafer and Austin Clemente.

Assistant coach Talmadge Reasoner said the junior varsity finished 4-4-6. He presented the JV most improved award to Will Cottrell and the JV MVP plaque to Kevin Cervantes.

Dennis said he completed his ninth season as head coach of the Owls, and has been involved in soccer for 33 years. “It’s my passion,” he said.
