Flu shots available at Fort Vallonia Days

While attending Fort Vallonia Days on Saturday, people will have an opportunity to receive a flu shot.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Vallonia Christian Church, 2344 S. Main St., Walgreens will administer free flu vaccines for those who qualify for a flu vaccine voucher.

The vouchers are available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last and are provided by Walgreens as part of a nationwide program that helps make flu vaccines available to those without health insurance coverage or are unable to afford a flu vaccination.

"The opportunity to bring free flu shots to anyone in our community is a great service to offer," said Stephanie Strothmann, director of Covering Kids and Families of United Way.

"When we’ve reached out for partnership locally with Fort Vallonia Days, they were receptive and believe we will be able to serve at least 100 residents," she said. "The national partnership with Walgreens and FamliyWize is a huge benefit to our local community. We encourage all residents to roll up their sleeve and take this preventative action."

FamilyWize Community Service Partnership, Walgreens, the Department of Health and Human Service and Covering Kids and Families of United are providing a series of community health clinic events at no cost to make the flu vaccination more accessible in underserved communities throughout the country.

These organizations are working together to help deliver flu vaccines for uninsured and underinsured residents and encourage preventive measures heading into the peak of flu season.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a yearly flu vaccination for anyone 6 months of age and older to help protect against the seasonal flu epidemic. December through March is the peak season for flu activity, and individuals are urged to take preventative measures to keep themselves and those around them healthy.
