A local radio station is socking it to cancer this month with its annual cancer awareness campaign and fundraiser.

Radio 96.3 WJAA in Seymour is selling cancer themed socks through early November to raise money for the Don and Dana Myers Cancer Center at Schneck Medical Center.

It’s also a way to raise awareness about early detection, said Robert Becker, owner and general manager of Radio 96.3.

"It makes all the difference," he said. "So many cancers are treatable if you catch them early."

Socks are available in a variety of styles and prints for $5 a pair.

They can be purchased at sponsor locations including Centra Credit Union, Darlage Custom Meats, A Total Tan, Big O Tires, Baird Homes, Northside Liquors, Jackson County Visitor Center, Skaggs Builders-Weslin Estates, Deputy Electronics, The Office Center, Schneck Medical Center Gift Shop, Stahl Insurance, Doggie Dazzle, Funke Fusion, Vicks Liquors, Winsupply, Premier Energy, Pizza Palace and Luecke Audio Video Appliance.

Proceeds will support the cancer center’s local education and treatment programs including free cancer screenings.

The station has organized an October cancer fundraiser for the cancer center for the last decade.

It started with the sale of pink light bulbs and over the years has included Christmas ornaments, t-shirts and tote bags.

"We try to do something new and different each year," he said. "They make great Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers."

This year’s socks are a great way to show support for loved ones battling cancer or for cancer survivors to celebrate, Becker said.

"It’s something we can do to support the cancer center and help the community," he said. "Hopefully, it will be very successful. We want to sell as many as we can."

The fundraiser usually results in the radio station donating around $2,000 to the cancer center each year. Becker said he’s ordered a few hundred pairs but can order more.

Although October has traditionally been about sporting pink for breast cancer awareness, it’s now about acknowledging all types of cancer, he added.

The radio station will be doing live broadcasts at some of the sponsor locations throughout the month.
