Vallonia man faces preliminary murder charge

A 66-year-old Vallonia man faces a preliminary charge of attempted murder after an incident early Sunday morning in northern Washington County, police report.

The incident that led to the arrest of Roger Root on the Level 1 felony charge involved Richard L. Williams of Salem who was taken by car to St. Vincent Hospital in Salem after he had been shot multiple times, according to a news release from Sgt. Cary Huls with the Indiana State Police. Williams, who is 46, was later listed in stable condition at the University of Louisville Hospital.

Huls, the public information with the Sellersburg Post, said the investigation began just before 5 a.m. when officers with the Washington County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to a home in the 10000 block of North Hattabaugh Road, Vallonia. Police were told Williams and Root were both overnight guests at the home when the incident occurred.

Root was arrested after being interviewed by Detective Travis Baker with the state police. Crime scene technicians with the state police also were involved in the case that remains under investigation.

Attempted murder is a Level 1 felony punishable by 20 to 40 years upon conviction.
