Recognizing valor
Thumbs up to Jim “Storm” Dobbs of Vallonia who was presented with a Quilt of Valor on Saturday. The quilt, presented by Southern Indiana Quilts of Valor, recognizes Dobbs for his service with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover all service members and veterans touched by war with wartime Quilts of Valor.
Letting in the sun
Thumbs up to former Seymour Police Chief Bill Abbott who received the Frank O’Bannon Sunshine Award from the Hoosier State Press Association on Saturday during its annual awards banquet in Greenwood. Abbott, who retired Sept. 13, was nominated by The Tribune for the award, which is presented to an individual, group or organization that has demonstrated outstanding efforts to protect and enhance the concepts of open government in Indiana. The award is named after the late Indiana Gov. Frank O’Bannon, who was an advocate of open records and meetings.

Students of the month
Thumbs up to Brownstown Central High School senior Lauren Wood, Brownstown Central Middle School seventh grader Bella Brown and Brownstown Elementary School first grader Sutton Sparks for being recognized as Brownstown Central Community School Corp. Students of the Month at this month’s board of trustees meeting.
Community service
Thumbs up to the more than 100 employees of Cummins Seymour Engine Plant who completed nine projects Sept. 13 as part of Platform Four Community Work Day. The volunteers spruced up three local parks and helped senior citizens with various outdoor tasks at their homes across the city.
Thumbs up to the 150 or so volunteers who took part in the ninth annual Thousand Ten Project on Sept. 7 by helping those in need in the community. Ten groups of volunteers, each consisting of 10 to 15 people, were able to help three families apiece. The volunteers came from The Alley, Freetown Christian Church, Brownstown Christian Church, Seymour Christian Church, Tampico Christian Church, Livingfire Ministries, Genesis Church of Seymour and Cornerstone Community Church.
