Cameron Northern scored two goals in the first half to help Greenwood Christian Academy’s girls edge Trinity Lutheran 3-2 on the Cougars’ field Tuesday afternoon.

Northern scored her fist goal at 36:03 of the opening half.

The Cougars had several strong attacks and kept GCA goalie Ellie Bigelow busy making saves before Northern made it 2-0 at the 23:12 mark and the score stayed 2-0 at the half.

“We had a little bit of a rocky start but the girls came into it," Trinity Lutheran coach Thom Hayes said. "We’ve got a lot of challenges with injuries and had to move people around today, but they came into it and battled the heat, battled not having subs.

“Really, once we got settled in on defense it made all the difference in the world because we had offense after that happened.”

Emma Myers cut GCA’s lead in half with a goal at 32:03 with Emma Goecker assisting on the play.

The visitors (4-2-1) regained a two-goal advantage off a score by Adeline Jolly with 18:15 remaining.

Trinity came right back with a score by Mary Matthews off an assist by Myers to close the scoring at 17:44.

Both teams missed scoring opportunities the remainder of the match as Trinity finished with 27 shots.

One of the injuries Hayes was talking about was to starting goalie Genesis Munoz, who suffered a broken finger and was unable to play in goal. Ashley Goecker filled the goalie position for Trinity and had 16 saves.

Hayes said he felt like his team had some excellent scoring chances.

“We had some good passing. I would say I was overall pleased with our game, our passing, our offense, and certainly our defense from their second goal on," Hayes said. “Their last goal was just a tough break.”

The busy week for Trinity (2-4) will continue Thursday with a home match against Brown County at 5:30 p.m., and the Cougars will host Corydon Central Saturday at 11 a.m.
