Jackson County runners outrun the sun

Tuesday’s sweltering heat didn’t stop Jackson County cross country runners.

Harriers from Brownstown Central, Crothersville and Trinity Lutheran tackled the course at Hardy Lake in Scottsburg and came away with solid results among a crowded field.

Crothersville’s Kaylyn Holman, the defending girls’ race winner, had a strong start to the race but came up short in repeating. Her time of 23 minutes and 32.30 seconds put her in fourth place. She was the top finisher from Jackson County.

The Braves took third in the girls’ race with a team score of 86 and an average time of 26:13.54.

Jazzlyn Yeadon led the way for the Braves with a mark of 23:50.67 and was followed closely by Grace Garland, who finished 14th at 24:52.46.

Rounding out the scoring for Brownstown Central was Emma Winks in 28th (27:07.52), Kylee Wischmeier in 33rd (27:37.51) and Zoe Fountain in 36th (27:39.54).

Other top finishers for Crothersville were Grace Wilson in 11th (24:35.70) and Ella Plasse in 26th (26:14.39). Kiarra Lankins came in 39th (27:48.17) to round out the times for the Tigers.

Sadie Nay was the top-finishing Cougar with a time of 27:10.60 for 29th. Abby Hildreth and Bryanna Bailey took 60th and 65th for Trinity with times of 32:11.11 and 33:27.61, respectively.

On the boys’ side, the Braves finished fourth with a team score of 87 and average time of 20:02.31. They were led by Nathan Koch’s 18:23.54 which was good enough for fourth place.

Mason Kellogg was 10th for the Braves at 19:11.36 and Clayton Barger was 25th at 20:36.29. Trey Hackman and Cameron Day rounded out the scoring for the Braves in 28th and 36th with times of 20:43.84 and 21:16.55, respectively. Andrew Wheeles finished with a time of 20:23, third on the team and 27th overall.

Crothersville took seventh out of seven in the boys’ team race and were led by David Rose’s eighth-place finish at 18:35.17. Carson Farmer in 54th (25:19.93), Taylor Tatlock in 55th (25:20.26), Andrew Stainbrook in 57th (25:42.51) and Briar Robinson in 71st (31:35.74) rounded out the scoring.

Trinity’s Evan Hunt finished 64th for the Cougars, coming in with a time of 27:56.33.

Up next

Brownstown Central and Trinity Lutheran will head to the Brown County Invite, the site of the 2019 sectional race, on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. while Crothersville is off until next Tuesday at the Eastern (Pekin) Invite.

The Braves are also set to compete in the Tuesday invite, which begins at 5 p.m.
