Police continue to search for man who pointed a firearm

Police continue to search for a man wanted on charges of intimidation with a weapon and pointing a firearm.

Police have been searching for James Helton since Thursday afternoon.

Those preliminary charges stem from an incident reported Thursday in the Hayden area, according to a news release from the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department.

Before officers could arrive in that area, Helton had left and gone to his home on County Road 1300E in Jackson County. County Road 1300E is the Jackson County line with Jennings County.

Deputies arriving at Helton’s home saw a vehicle matching the description of the one Helton had driven to the incident in Hayden, police said.

Deputies attempted to make contact with Helton but could not get a response. After several attempts to call Helton out did not draw a response, members of the Jennings County SWAT team set up a perimeter around the home.

A Jennings County search warrant was obtained to search the large camper that Helton was using for his home.

The Indiana State Police was contacted to execute the search warrant for Helton. After several attempts to call Helton out, the state police SWAT team entered camper. Helton was not found inside the camper.

Jennings County Sheriff Kenny Freeman and Jackson County Sheriff Rick Meyer were both on scene throughout the incident.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of James Helton may contact the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department at 812-346-5111 or the anonymous tip line at 812-346-0342.
