Police confirmed that two females have been airlifted to Indiana University Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after a fire reported in a rural subdivision.

Lt. Adam Nicholson with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department did not say how old the females were, but that two were injured in a fire.

The fire occurred at a residence in the 2000 block of Lakeview Drive in the Oxmoor housing addition.

He said one told police she believed a cigarette could have caused the fire, but a cause has not been determined and remains under investigation.

The extent of their injuries was not available. The fire has since been put out.

Officer Brad Barker responded to the call and was assisted by multiple agencies.
