Tigers senior enjoying final year of athletics

Brandon Riley says that being around his friends is one of the reasons he decided to join the basketball, golf and track and field teams at Crothersville.

In his second year with the track program, he’s concentrating on the 400 and 3,200.

“I’m usually in the fourth to sixth lanes (in the 400),” Riley said. “You don’t have to run 12 to 15 minutes like you do in the 3,200. I’m a 1:03 kind of guy. Toward the end of the 400, I try to stride out more and try to catch the guy that’s in front of me.”

Riley said getting off to a good start is the key in the distance race.

“I try to keep up with one of the faster people for the first couple laps, and if I feel I can’t keep up with them for the rest of the race, I’ll drop back with a couple of runners and stick with them and beat them at the end,” Riley said.

He said his best time has been 14:21, and he is hoping to break 14 minutes for the 3,200.

“At the end, I usually feel that I have too much to give, so I need to try harder halfway through,” Riley said. “I usually kick around the 200. I can kick around the 400.”

The senior has filled in on relays in a few meets, and his favorite is the 1,600 relay.

On the schedule, Riley looks forward to the home meets.

“We’ve only had two home meets this year, but I really like them because they are close to home, and your parents and friends can come and watch you,” he said.

He encourages everyone to work hard in practice, and tries to be a positive influence to his teammates.

“If you don’t feel like you can do it, then you probably won’t give it your all,” Riley said. “If you feel like you can win this and get a new record, then you’re going to try harder and try to beat the people in front of you.”

He enjoys attending CHS.

“I actually know everybody in the school, which I really enjoy. Our classes are small in size, so our teachers get to know us individually more,” Riley said. “Spending time with friends in class is probably one of my favorite things. I’ll miss them when I leave. Crothersville is a good place, good people to be around. They have a really nice program to get an associate degree before you even graduate.”
