Wings Over Muscatatuck set at refuge

Everyone who enjoys birds is invited to Wings Over Muscatatuck at Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge, 12987 E. U.S. 50, Seymour.

The 21st annual festival starts with a half-day birding trip by van (for serious birders) from 8 a.m. to noon May 10 and a guided big tree walk from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Advance registration is required for the van trip and may be made by calling 812-524-1914.

Also May 10, a free family-friendly movie, “The Big Year," will be shown at 7 p.m. at the refuge visitor center. It’s about the hilarious adventures of three men competing in a birding contest.

On May 11, there will be guided birding van tours of the refuge at various set times during the day and one management tour. There is no charge for the tours, but advance registration is required. There also will be a morning bird walk, live birds of prey programs, children’s activities, bird banding, birdhouse building for youngsters, a bird cake walk, a falconry program and the Junior Duck Stamp Contest awards ceremony.

The Muscatatuck Wildlife Society also will conduct a native plant sale where starts of many different native wildflowers may be purchased.

On May 12, a special guided tour of Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge in Madison will be from 8 a.m. to noon. That refuge is only open to visitors at certain times, and the tour will be a rare opportunity to learn about one of Indiana’s natural treasures from the people who know it best.
