Two die in wreck near North Vernon

Two motorists lost their lives Wednesday afternoon in a crash on State Road 3 near County Road 25E in Jennings County.

Erma M. Campbell, 78, and Rhonda R. Steinert, 45, both of North Vernon, were pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck by an official with the Jennings County Coroner’s Office, according to a news release from Sgt. Stephen Wheeles with the Indiana State Police Versailles Post.

Wheeles said the crash showed Campbell was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox north on State Road 3 when the vehicle crossed the centerline for an unknown reason into the path of a 2006 Ford Focus being driven south by Steinert. The wreck, reported at about 1 p.m., was initially investigated by Trooper Matt Holley.

The near head-on collision led to both drivers sustaining fatal injuries, Wheeles said.

He said State Road 3 was closed in the area for approximately three hours for crash investigation, which involved a crash reconstruction team from the post, and cleanup.

The investigation is ongoing.

Officers with Jennings County Sheriff’s Department assisted along with firefighters from Vernon Fire Department and medical personnel with Jennings County Emergency Medical Services.
