New community race will be a mad dash

Seymour Tri Kappa is offering a new race to the community.

The March Mad-Dash 10K run and 5K run/walk will start at 9 a.m. Saturday, beginning at Seymour High School and ending at Harmony Park.

Seymour resident and Tri Kappa member Holly Coates is the chairwoman for the event, which Seymour Tri Kappa plans to continue annually. The first 100 participants to sign up for the race will receive the special commemorative insulated cup with the special race logo.

“This is our first year for the race, and we have many fun things planned, including a silent auction going on before and after the race,” Coates said. “We have had many great local businesses donate awesome items, and we are still accepting items for our silent auction.”

Funds raised by Seymour Tri Kappa in the past have provided support to local organizations, including renewable college scholarships for local high school students each year.

“Funds from race sponsorships will be used to cover race administration and to purchase T-shirts for participants,” Coates said. “Any additional money from sponsorships will go toward the many organizations we donate to every year.”

Past recipients have included Anchor House Family Assistance Center and Pantry, CASA and Jackson County Public Library.

Tri Kappa’s fundraising goal is set at $5,000 for the Mad-Dash, and the sorority is getting close to that, Coates said.

“After the race, all participants 21 years of age and older may receive a complimentary beer provided by Seymour Brewing Company, where IDs will be required,” Coates said. “The Seymour band Bad Medicine will also be on hand after the race to entertain the crowd with live music at Harmony Park.”

The route for the 10K race (6.2 miles) and 5K (3.1 miles) will take racers around the high school and through neighborhoods behind the school.

Coates said participants are encouraged to wear NCAA apparel if they wish to promote their favorite teams in line with the March Madness basketball tournaments.

Online registration at indianatiming.com will close Thursday, but walk-up registration will be accepted from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Seymour High School commons and beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday. Registration also is available on the Seymour Tri Kappa March Mad-Dash Facebook page.

Tri Kappa is a unique philanthropic organization that exists only within the boundaries of Indiana with the goal of bringing women together for the promotion of charity, culture and education. Seymour’s Gamma Phi chapter has been an integral part of the Seymour community since 1927.

The Seymour Brewing Co. is a top sponsor for this year’s race, and any local business or organization interested in being a sponsor for the Mad Dash or donating an item for the silent auction may send an email to [email protected] or contact Coates at 812-528-3542.
