Seymour police are investigating a shooting in JayC Food Store parking lot on the city’s west side.

The shooting took place around 6 p.m. Sunday.

Police Chief Bill Abbott said two men, who had some sort of family relationship, were in an argument when the shooting took place and one shot the other.

Police believe the shooting occurred after a fight over a child custody or visitation issue.

”There’s a family history here,” he said from the scene as police continued to investigate the area.

Abbott said at least one shot was fired, and the shooter was in custody.

The shooter was driving a gray Chevrolet Suburban and stopped in the parking lot in the middle of the roadway.

The man who was shot had parked a navy Buick sedan in a space.

Abbott said at least one shot was fired but declined to say where the man was struck.

The man who was shot was taken to Schneck Medical Center in critical condition.

“It’s a life-threatening injury,” Abbott said.

Officers Crystal Schapson and Ryan Cherry were the first on the scene. Seymour police were assisted by officers with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.
