IHSAA releases new fall sports classifications for next two school years

The Indiana High School Athletic Association announced the new classifications for four fall team sports for the 2019-’20 and ‘20-’21 seasons Thursday.

The enrollment figures were submitted by the schools to the Indiana Department of Education last fall and are used to determine the classifications for team sports.

Tournament success factor points also were used to determine the new classifications.

Future sectional lineups will be released at a later time.

The classifications for boys and girls basketball will be released in late March, and baseball and softball will come out later in the summer.

Football

While Seymour and Brownstown Central aren’t changing classes, both programs could see much different sectional fields down the road.

In Class 5A, Seymour is the sixth smallest (1,522 students) of 33 schools.

Columbus East is moving out of Sectional 15 and up to Class 6A due to the success factor.

Jeffersonville has dropped down to 5A and is now the largest school in the class with 2,035 students. Bedford North Lawrence, Floyd Central and New Albany are all staying in 5A.

Brownstown Central will be the eighth smallest (562 students) school in Class 3A of 64 teams.

The Braves’ sectional could get shaken up, as both Scottsburg and Edgewood both dropped to Class 3A from 4A.

Southridge, a team the Braves has faced in past sectionals and regionals, has been bumped up to 3A because of the success factor.

Volleyball

Seymour (4A), Brownstown Central (3A), Crothersville (A) Trinity Lutheran (A) and Medora (A) will all stay in the same classes for volleyball.

Medora is the smallest school of 99 programs in Class A with 54 students. Trinity (149) is 76th and Crothersville sits 88th (102).

Barr-Reeve, a team that Trinity faced in both ‘17 and ‘18, will now compete in 2A because of the success factor.

Providence will stay in Class 4A for volleyball, presumably in the same sectional as Seymour.

Soccer

Seymour will stay in Class 3A, and Trinity isn’t moving from Class A for boys and girls soccer.

The Owls rank 59th of 92 girls teams in 3A and 59th of 103 for boys.

Trinity sits in 81st of 89 in Class A for girls and 85th of 100 teams for boys programs.

The IHSAA expanded soccer from two to three classes in 2017.
