If you weren’t able to purchase a box from a local Girl Scout, don’t worry. There are several upcoming opportunities to buy cookies to support local troops.

Starting Friday and running through March 24, Girl Scouts will have booths set up at Seymour businesses to sell cookies at $5 or $6 a box. The businesses include Walmart Supercenter, Arby’s, The Brooklyn Pizza Co., JCPenney and Racin’ Mason Pizza and Fun Zone and also downtown Seymour at Second and Chestnut streets.

Six Jackson County troops will participate in the cookie booths.

Missy Casner, leader of Troop 1239 in Seymour and Jackson County Girl Scout cookie chairwoman, said nearly 15,000 boxes of cookies were delivered to the county Feb. 22.

“The majority of those boxes were preordered, but there are still plenty to be purchased at your local booths,” Casner said.

The top preselling Girl Scout in the county was Avery Williams of Troop 1239. She presold almost 900 boxes of cookies. She also plans on working at the booths.

That 15-member troop led the county in presales with 3,600 boxes.

“They set their goal for presales at half of what they want to sell after cookie booths,” Casner said. “They started out way above the 50 percent point going into cookie booths. If they average 400 boxes per girl equating to 6,000 boxes, each girl will get their membership paid for the 2019-2020 Girl Scout troop year and they will earn a bonus on each box.”

For the girls, she said it’s worth it because at their first meeting of the 2018-19 Girl Scout troop year, they set out to do a lot of community service projects and fun activities.

“So far, they have done a community service project at each of their meetings this year,” Casner said.

The recipients of those community service projects are Mental Health America of Jackson County, Friends of the Jackson County Public Library, Jackson County Clothing Center, Humane Society of Jackson County, Double Down Outreach, Jackson County Cold Night Out Shelter and Anchor House Family Assistance Center and Pantry.

They also worked during the Humane Society’s Dog Days Dog Show and helped with Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes.

Next, the troop is going to make care bags for families at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health that will include a box of Girl Scout cookies. If anyone wants to donate a box of cookies for the project, email Casner at [email protected].

“Also, they are planning to bless the first-born baby girl in Jackson County on or after March 12,” Casner said. “March 12 is the birthday of Girl Scouts. It also falls in the week we call Girl Scout Week that is kicked off by Girl Scout Sunday.”

The Girl Scouts also will greet people and pass out bulletins March 10 at Seymour Christian Church. They would like to do that at other churches, too.

“They will be recognized for their service and be identifiable by their uniforms,” Casner said.

Troop 1239 has participated a lot of fun activities over the years and looks to continue those. That includes snow tubing, horseback riding, camping, serving as Senate pages, going to a water park, hosting skating and pool parties and more.

One hundred percent of the net proceeds from Girl Scout cookie sales is retained by the originating council and troop to allow members to do community projects and fun activities.

“There are so many opportunities and experiences these girls can do with support from the Girl Scout cookie program, and we want to take this opportunity to thank the community for their support,” said Casner, who is completing her seventh year as a Girl Scout leader.

Here is one of the local Girl Scouts’ favorite recipes.

Thin Mints Sweet and Salty Mix

Ingredients

1 12-ounce bag of semisweet, bittersweet or milk chocolate chips (use your favorite; we like butterscotch chips)

¼ teaspoon peppermint extract

4½ cups Kellogg’s Crispix cereal

1½ cups powdered sugar

20 Thin Mints cookies, divided into two groups of 10

4 cups mini-pretzel twists

2 cups dry-roasted salted peanuts (optional)

Directions:

Make the Thin Mints Crispix. Melt 11½ ounces of chocolate chips in a saucepan or in microwave for three or four minutes until melted. Add mint extract to chocolate and stir. Pour Crispix cereal into a large mixing bowl. Pour melted chocolate over the cereal and gently stir until completely coated in chocolate. Stir in with powered sugar and 10 finely crushed Thin Mints. Gently combine, coating the cereal. Add the more sweet and salty. Stir in 10 coarsely chopped Thin Mints, mini-pretzels and peanuts. Enjoy!
