Braves senior helps in any way she can on hardwood

After school, Brownstown Central’s Shelby Reynolds is always in the gym preparing for her next game.

“I love basketball,” Reynolds said. “I started when I was in kindergarten with those little kids. I just like team sports and I’ve always liked to play basketball.”

She played junior varsity her freshman and sophomore years before splitting time between JV and varsity as a junior.

This winter, she has contributed to the Braves’ winning varsity season.

Reynolds said she feels like teamwork has been the key to having a winning season.

“I think we’ve worked as a team, and we have some players that are really good at making their shots,” Reynolds said.

Reynolds, who said she enjoys watching basketball on TV, mentioned communication on the floor is key.

“You have to talk or you won’t get anywhere,” she said.

She said athletes always have to keep a positive outlook.

“You have to have a good attitude and keep your head up, and work hard,” Reynolds said.

Reynolds said if she is unable to get open for a shot she enjoys getting assists.

“I’m normally a passer, but I have a good shot from the wing,” she said. “I like to shoot from the side or shoot the 15-footer.”

The senior would rather play against a zone because she feels it is easier for her to get open to shoot.

She said she enjoys transition basketball, and when the Braves are on defense, “I like to play zone, but I like both.”

Reynolds enjoyed the home games on the schedule.

“They are a lot of fun. I like the band playing,” Reynolds said.

She said her favorite away gym is Charlestown, where the Braves are playing the sectional this week.

Reynolds said she likes the competition and feels like the Braves play a strong schedule, and said she enjoyed competing in the Toby Yoho Tournament at Eastern Greens during the holidays.

“That was a lot of fun. We played really well,” Reynolds said.

The Braves lost to Owen Valley in the championship game at Toby Yoho.

BCHS defeated Charlestown in the opening game of the sectional Tuesday night, and will face Scottsburg tonight.

Reynolds has enjoyed being a student at BCHS.

“I’ve enjoyed making friends,” Reynolds said. “I like my classes and my teachers. The bus rides have been a lot of fun. We’ve had a lot of fun together.”
