Stolen vehicle pulled from river

A stolen vehicle was pulled from the East Fork White River on Thursday evening, after a two-and-a-half-hour effort to extract it.

Officers with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and conservation officers used a wrecker to pull the gray 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche from about 6 feet of water.

No one was in the vehicle — owned by Danielle R. Brown of Seymour — and no injuries were reported. It’s unclear when the vehicle was reported stolen.

Officers with the sheriff’s department responded to a call at 8:28 p.m. in the 8900 block of North County Road 160E near Rockford.

A woman told a dispatcher that she saw the lights of the vehicle in the water before it became submerged.

Sheriff Mike Carothers, who responded to the scene, said the vehicle had been driven off of the boat ramp near the Rockford Bridge.

It came to rest north of the low-head dam that spans the river at Indiana American Water Co., he said.

Carothers said the water was at the roof of the vehicle when police arrived.

“We could see the top of it,” he said. “Waves flowed over it, and it would go under, but then you’d see it again.”

The Seymour Police Department is investigating the theft. Anyone with information should contact the department at 812-522-1234.

Carothers was assisted by officers Mitch Ray, Brad Barker and J.L. McElfresh and Indiana Conservation Officers Nate Berry and Blake Everhart.

The sheriff’s department also took a report of a stolen white Dodge truck at 7:09 p.m. That report was made by Charles Newby, whose son, Andrew, owns the truck.

Police do not believe the two thefts are related, Carothers said.

Anyone with information about that theft should contact the sheriff’s department at 812-358-2141.
