From court to course, Tigers senior likes competing

From playing basketball and golf to being a student at Crothersville High School, Will Amick said he has a lot of good memories.

“I’ll remember the friends I’ve made,” the senior said. “I’ve had good teachers. I’ve had a lot of fun, and I would definitely recommend students go out for sports. Everyone in basketball has been great all four years.”

Amick began playing basketball in third grade and began his golf career his freshman year.

In the gym, he is an interior player for the Tigers.

“I’m in for mostly defense, box out, rebound and play in the post if needed,” he said.

Amick, who stands at 6-foot-2, said he likes battling for rebounds.

“I like it because I feel that’s what I can do best,” he said. “You’ve got to get good positioning, and you’ve got to be physical.”

On defense, he prefers man-to-man, and he usually is in the back when the Tigers press.

Offensively, he said he would rather play on the high post than the block area.

“I feel comfortable shooting from the free throw line,” he said. “I would rather play against a man defense.”

He said it is fun being part of a winning season. Going into this weekend’s Scott County Invitational, the Tigers were 5-1.

“We just have a whole bunch of talent this year,” he said. “No one cares who scores. They’re very unselfish. That’s a very good thing to have. We’re just going to have to stay focused and keep moving the ball and just find who’s hot that night.”

Moving forward, he said the players need to work hard in practice so that translates into the games.

“Practice is very important because you can kind of tell how we’re playing, how the game is going to go,” he said. “Focusing in practice means focusing in games. Coach always says you play how you practice.”

In golf, Amick has played the No. 1 position the past two seasons and is looking forward to another strong season. He played No. 2 for the Tigers his freshman year.

“My goal is to just play as well as I can play and not let me take myself out of it mentally,” he said.

The Tigers play their home matches at Westwood Golf Course in Scottsburg, a nine-hole, par-35 course.

“I like the course a lot,” Amick said. “It’s not too difficult, but it’s not too easy, as well. My favorite hole would probably be either the first or the ninth. They are both par 4s.”

He said his favorite away course is Champions Pointe in Henryville.

Amick said his low score has been 42. At an 18-hole tournament in 2017, he was in position to break 90, but he didn’t get to complete his round because of lightning.

“I’d say the strongest part of my game is my irons,” he said. “I’m pretty good at putting. Off the tee, my game is probably mid-tier. I hit about 250 (yards) on the average.”

Amick said he continuously has to be aware of the direction and strength of the wind.

“Sometimes, we have to go two clubs up or down, depending on how hard the wind is blowing,” he said.

With putting, he said he has to adjust from playing early in the morning to late afternoon.

“Once it dries up, the greens get a lot faster,” he said. “At Henryville, in the sectional especially, that course got a lot harder, so the greens were a lot faster.”

Amick said he found out his freshman year that Greg Kilgore, who was the basketball head coach, also was going to coach golf.

“I had study hall seventh period. He was kind of recruiting for the golf team and asked who wanted to play, and I said I might as well,” he said. “I have enjoyed it.”
