Marion Darlene Slade, age 91, passed away at her home in Indianapolis Sunday, December 16, 2018. Marion lived most of her 72-year married life in Seymour, IN.

She was born in East St. Louis, moving to Princeton, IN as an infant. She graduated from Princeton High School in 1944 and was married to her high school sweetheart, James E. Slade, Jr., January 24, 1946, when he returned home from serving in WWII. The two had grown up together, even attending the same church, St. Mark’s Evangelical United Brethren Church.

The two moved to Seymour in 1954, where they lived for 67 years. Marion worked as secretary of Seymour’s Jackson Elementary School for over 30 years. She was a member of the Seymour City Extension Homemakers for over 65 years and worked as a volunteer at the election polls many years. She and Jim loved to travel and to ballroom dance. They often went to visit their only grandchild in Florida and also met annually with his military group until recent years.

Marion was a member of the former Evangelical United Brethren Church in Seymour, where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She attended the Freetown Methodist Church until they moved to Indianapolis.

Marion is survived by her daughter, Jayne Slade-Dashiell, Anna Maria Island, FL; one granddaughter, Kristin Dashiell of Bangkok, Thailand; and her daughter-in-law, Kay Passailaigue, Charleston, SC. Other survivors include her nephews David Witherspoon of Evansville; Byron Witherspoon of Elk Grove Village, IL; and Gary Wright of Charleston, SC.; brothers-in-law Richard, Cedar Park, TX and William (Raquel), Princeton, IN; sisters-in-law Patricia (Jerry) Frohbieter of Haubstadt, IN; and Karen (Boyd) of Carmel, IN., as well as cousins, other nephews, and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband James April 17, 2018; two of her children: James Dennis in 2012 and Bruce Allen in 1960; and her son-in-law, Victor Dashiell in 2017. Other deceased family members include her parents, Harley and Anna Mae (Miller) Dearing, and her sisters, Marjorie Witherspoon and Mae Dean Wright.

Funeral Services will be at Voss & Sons Funeral Home in Seymour (316 N. Chestnut St) on Wednesday at 11 am with the Rev. David Ison officiating. Visitation will be prior to the funeral from 9 am to 11 am. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Princeton, IN at 4 pm Eastern/3 pm Central with Pastor Kevin Wilson officiating.
