Jerry Hackney, a retired telecommunications specialist, was sworn in as District 2 councilman at the beginning of the Seymour City Council meeting Monday evening.

Hackney, 73, was selected during a Republican caucus Nov. 16 to replace former councilman Brian D’Arco for the seat.

Hackney will serve the remainder of D’Arco’s term, which expires Dec. 31, 2019. The filing period for re-election will open and close in January.

D’Arco resigned because of a new job he took out of town.

Hackney voted on a number of items during the meeting, including salary ordinances, a grant application for One Chamber Square, tax abatements and reclassification of a residential property.

He retired in 1996 from Indiana Telephone Co. and then sold telephone systems. In 2006, he started Hackney Communication Network, and he and his wife, Kathi, sold the business and retired at the end of 2016.
