Seymour man arrested on attempted murder charge

A 28-year-old Seymour man was arrested Wednesday on an attempted murder charge after he fired multiple rounds at a woman and threatened another man, police report.

Jose Leandro Buval was arrested on the Level 1 felony charge by police responding to a report from dispatchers of an open line 911 call in the 1700 block of West Second Street around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Buval also faces a Level 5 felony charge of criminal recklessness and Level 6 felony charges of pointing a fireman and intimidation.

When police arrived for the welfare check, Buval would not let them in without a warrant, but a woman told officers he had a gun, Detective Sgt. C.J. Foster said.

Buval was then taken into custody and police conducted a security sweep of the house, Foster said.

The woman told police Buval tried to kill her by firing a semiautomatic handgun at her, he said.

Police believe Buval and the woman were involved in a relationship.

Another man in the house said Buval also held a gun to his head. Five other people including were in the home during the incident, but no injuries were reported.

Foster said at least three rounds were fired into the floor and the ceilings in the kitchen and living room during the incident.

Buval was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 5:09 p.m. Wednesday without bond pending his initial hearing. A Level 1 felony carries a sentence between 20 and 40 years upon conviction.
