Sectional champions

Thumbs-up to the Brownstown Central Braves for beating the Batesville Bulldogs 35-28 on Friday night to win the Class 3A Sectional 31 crown and advance to the regional. The sectional title is the 13th one in the 20 sectional championships appearances the Braves have made since Reed May took over the program in 1993. The Braves, shooting for a fourth regional title, travel to Evansville Memorial tonight to play the 12-0 Tigers, who won their school’s first state title in football a year ago.

Getting out the vote

Thumbs-up to everyone who voted in this year’s midterm election and all of the candidates who put their names on the line. It was a record year for early voting and voting is the way we make our voices heard.

Well stocked

Thumbs-up to a group of Seymour High School students from the Key Club, FFA, Owls’ baseball team and the Owl Theater Co. who recently went trick-or-treating for canned goods and non-perishable items for Anchor House Family Assistance Center and Pantry. The group collected 2,007 items to surpass the Key Club’s goal of collecting 2,000 items, an amount that far surpassed a similar effort in 2017 when 936 items were collected.

A related thumbs-up to a group of students in Robin Perry’s business management class at Brownstown Central High School for organizing a greased pig contest as a fun way to raise funds for the Wounded Warrior project and a second group from that class that collected 1,313 cans of food for the Anchor House.

Students of the Month

Thumbs-up to Seymour Middle School’s Students of the Month for October. They are Kyndle Huddleston, Teylor VonDielingen, Jane Bartsch, Marlo Cornn, Bret Perry, Kevin Douglas, Zoey Luedeman and Isidro Marcos.

Everyday Hero

Thumbs-up to Paul Brock, executive director of Community Provisions of Jackson County Inc., Who received the “Everyday Hero” award Nov. 1 from the local chapter of Modern Woodmen of America for his work with the Seymour food pantry, which he established in 1997.

Undefeated

Thumbs-up to members of the Lutheran Central School’s fifth-grade volleyball team who finished the season with a 20-0 record. Members of the squad, coached by Jessica Wischmeier, are Maddie Adams, Emily Keller, Olivia Fritz, Harley Toppe, Hunter Trueblood, Erica Warren, Kassidy Wischmeier and Sophie Wischmeier. Julie Warren is the team’s assistant coach.

Unnecessary

Thumbs-down to those who made midterm election the most expensive. Estimates are that $3 to $5 billion was spent. Imagine what might have happened if that money had been put to use fighting hungry or curing the world of serious illnesses.
