Melvin Wischmeier, age 96, of Seymour, passed away on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at Covered Bridge Health Campus, Seymour.

Mr. Wischmeier was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Seymour, where he served as Elder. He worked at Arvins in Seymour for 25 years and was a life-long farmer. Mr. Wischmeier enjoyed farming, gardening, working with his animals, reading the daily newspaper, playing cards with his wife and relatives, and spending time with his family. In August, his family was presented the Hoosier Homestead award at the 2018 Indiana State Fair. The farm was recognized for being owned by his family for 100 years. He lived 88 of his 96 years in the same house, which was built by his father.

Born on September 3, 1922, in Seymour, he was the son of Martin and Lena Surenkamp Wischmeier, both of whom preceded him in death. On April 30, 1950, at Emanuel Lutheran Church, Dudleytown, he married Emy Lou Wehmiller, and she preceded him in death on August 25, 2014.

Survivors include three sons: Loren (Elizabeth) Wischmeier of Seymour; Roger (Patricia) Wischmeier of Seymour; and Denver (Danielle) Wischmeier of Mooresville; one daughter, Sandra (Brent) Kilgas of Seymour; one daughter-in-law, Sandra Wischmeier of Seymour; four sisters-in-law: Helen Wehmiller of Seymour; Marcella Wischmeier of Seymour; Jewell Wehmiller of Crothersville; and Donna Downing of Vallonia; 11 grandchildren: Casie (Misty) Wischmeier, Amanda (Wes) Konkle, B.J. (Aby) Wischmeier, Jeremy (Denise) Wischmeier, Jessica (Chris) Bailey, John (Cheyenne) Wischmeier, Denee (Corey) Lecher, Dillen Wischmeier, Caden Wischmeier, Stephanie (Matt) Meyers, and Mitchell Kilgas (fiance Lindsey Wetzel); 14 great-grandchildren: Caleb Wischmeier, Kelsey Wischmeier, Kailey Wischmeier, Kera Wischmeier, Avalee Konkle, Evan Wischmeier, Adalyn Wischmeier, Wyatt Wischmeier, Zoe Wischmeier, Braden Bailey, Coltin Bailey, Lexi Wischmeier, Ivey Wischmeier, and Zadora Lecher; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by one son, Donald Wischmeier; two brothers: Willard Wischmeier and Erwin Wischmeier; two sisters: Wilma Stuckwisch and Ella Benter.

Funeral services for Melvin Wischmeier will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2018, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Seymour, with Pastor Ralph Blomenberg, Pastor Philip Bloch, Pastor Jimmy Rodriguez, and Vicar Tyler Werner officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 12, 2018, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., and from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Seymour.

Interment will be at Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Seymour.

Memorials may be given to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Immanuel Lutheran School, and Trinity Lutheran High School.
