Beck’s Mill will host The Grind VI 5K Run/Walk starting at 9 a.m. Saturday to benefit the maintenance of the 201-year-old gristmill in Salem.

Beck’s Mill was almost in ruins after sitting idle for more than 50 years until it was fully restored by the late Bill Cook and his wife, Gayle, Pritchett Brothers with Ridgeway Architecture, many volunteers and donations.

Funds from this benefit will help preserve Beck’s Mill’s future. The registration fee is $20. Race day registration will be available starting at 7:30 a.m. with packet pickup. The event begins and ends at Beck’s Mill, 4433 S. Beck’s Mill Road.

Running awards are for top overall female/male runner and top three females and males in 11 age groups from 0 to 60 and up. Walking awards are the top three overall female/male. Just for fun awards will be given for the youngest and oldest participating.

Homemade soups, cornbread and drinks will be available after the race.

Foot races was one of the ways settlers would pass the day while waiting for their corn to be milled.
