FLOYDS KNOBS — Floyd Central won its third straight Hoosier Hills Conference championship Thursday with a 5-0 victory over visiting Seymour.

With the postseason coming next week, the fourth-ranked Highlanders proved again that they’ll be their sectional and regional favorites by dropping just seven games in the sweep.

The Highlanders swept all 15 matches in HHC tournaments wins over Madison, Jeffersonville and Seymour. Floyd Central coach Robert Kleeman said after Thursday’s win that it’s no time to relax for his Highlanders.

“It’s obviously nice to win (the HHC) three years in a row,” he said. “The last two years we’ve won it and beaten all the regional teams, but we came up short in the regional two years in a row. We really want to focus on no letdowns this year.”

Despite the loss, Seymour coach Brad Emerson liked the way his Owls competed with Floyd, which is now 17-1 on the season.

“They’re ranked fourth in the state for a reason,” Emerson said. “I thought we came out and battled hard. I thought we did a pretty good job overall and we made them work and earn it.”

It took Connor Mason at No. 2 singles and Eric Whitehouse at No. 3 singles less than an hour to put the Highlanders up 2-0. Mason defeated Trey Hohenstreiter and Whitehouse beat Braden Handloser. Both scores were 6-0, 6-1.

Alex Poe and Jordan Wilson clinched the championship with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Brandon Hubbard and Will Reinhart on the No. 1 doubles court.

Moments later, Lucas Sakamaki completed a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Adam Berry at No. 1 singles. Jake Thompson and Lincoln finished off the sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sam Schmidt and Andrew Levine at No. 2 doubles.

Like the Highlanders, Seymour now focuses on the postseason and the Owls like their chances at the sectional they host.

“I think we’re going to be in good position in sectional,” Emerson said. “There are no teams of (Floyd Central’s) caliber, but we’re going to have to go out and earn it.”
