Seymour’s girls soccer team scored three goals in the second half to defeat Silver Creek 3-0 on the Owls’ wet field Saturday morning.

The start of the match was delayed by lightning, and rain fell throughout the entire match.

“We don’t try to change it too much (in the rain),” Owls coach Greg Musser said. “Out here on this surface you don’t have mud and potholes and stuff to worry about. The main thing here is just the skipping of the ball. The last instructions I gave the girls before they went out there was just make sure they keep a body in front of the ball because it’s going to skip on us.

“We wanted to possess a little bit more in the first half. I thought we came out and started doing that, and then about the middle of the half we kind of went away from it and we were on our heels for a little bit there. We settled back into the game the last little bit of the half there and into the second half.”

The first half was a defensive battle resulting in each team attempting only two shots for a scoreless 40 minutes.

The Dragons had an excellent opportunity to score the first goal but Alyssa Wright’s shot bounced off the crossbar at 32:25 of the second half.

“They have some really good center mids and some forwards that have some good legs,” Musser said. “They’ve put some goals in on us the last couple years. I think Alyssa Wright in the middle is a very talented player. She got a good hit on one and the soccer Gods were on our side on that one.”

Seymour lit up the scoreboard when Lillie Wessel received a pass from Haley Westfall for a 1-0 lead at 16:32.

“We’ve been talking a lot about motion with our forwards up top and deceiving the defenders, and good things happen when we do that, and we were able to get a couple goals there in the second half and close this game home,” Musser said. “We really wanted to try and get some things implemented over the last couple days, but with all the rain and lightning we haven’t really been able to be out on the field.

We’ve been watching a lot of film and talking about a lot of things to the girls and I think they’re starting to buy into some of the stuff that they’re seeing. A lot of times they need to see it themselves and it’s been a good experience the last two games with what we’ve seen with New Albany and Silver Creek.”

Bailey Lykins scored an unassisted goal at 6:10 to extended it to 2-0.

Four minutes later the ball was rolling around in front of the goal when Wessel kicked it to Mia Schrader, who put it in the net to complete the scoring.

Both teams ended up with five shots. Seymour goalie Kate Snook had three saves. The Owls (7-2-1) will travel to Floyd Central Tuesday for a Hoosier Hills Conference match.
