Mr. Russell Raymond Heckman, 77, of Valparaiso formerly of Columbus, passed away on Sunday, August 26, 2018. He was born at home in Bobtown, Indiana on April 16, 1941 to the late Charles and Ruth (Diggs) Heckman.

Funeral services will be held at Voss & Sons Funeral Service in Seymour on Friday, August 31 at 11 am with Revs. Erik Sorenson and John Beabout officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery.

Family and friends may call at Voss & Sons Funeral Service on Thursday from 4-8 pm and Friday from 10 am until time of service.

Russell was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Waymansville. He attended White Creek Lutheran School through eighth grade and graduated from Cortland Sr. High School. After graduation he went to work at Cummins Engine Company, where he was employed for more than 40 years. He was a member of the Indiana National Guard.

On April 25, 1987 he married Nancy McCulley; she survives. Russell and Nancy spent the winters in Destin, FL, camping on the Gulf with friends. Russell was a loving husband and father, with a quick smile for everyone. He loved boating on Rough River Lake in Kentucky, eating Kiwanis chicken at the fair, and watching IU basketball. He was always up for a good joke and had an unbreakable bond with his dog, Pete.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Kristi (Cindy) Heckman and Kelli (Danielle) Heckman; step-children, Brad Acton, Barry Acton, Deana (Mark) Lecy and Jamie (Trish) Acton; grandchildren, Nicole, Reed, Erica, Jack, Lauren, Julia, Kristofer, Madelyn and Katelyn; siblings, Ron (Linda) Heckman, Mike Heckman, Linda (Bill) Penner, and Ruth Ann Heckman DeVoe and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Charlene Meadors and Cheryl A. Heckman; sister-in-law, Cheryl Heckman; and best friend, Pete the dog.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Waymansville, American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association or Red Sky Animal Rescue, in care of Voss & Sons Funeral Service.
