Owls, Braves, Cougars compete at Scott Hiles Invitational

BEDFORD Seymour, Brownstown Central and Trinity Lutheran all went to Bedford North Lawrence’s campus for the Scott Hiles Invitational on Monday.

In the boys’ race, Bloomington North were champions with 32 points, Jennings County got runner-up at 34 and Seymour was third at 103. Brownstown placed seventh of the eight scoring teams at 190.

North’s Isaiah Hollars was individual winner with a time of 16-minutes, 22.92-seconds.

Seymour’s Luke Plummer was eighth in 18:03, Brandon Kleber took 19th in 19:03, Luke Hauersperger ran a 19:29 for 25th, Luke Bane was 28th in 19:41 and Michael Proffer placed 38th in 20:02.

Mason Kellog paced Brownstown by finishing 15th in 18:55. Clayton Barger (49th, 20:34), Trey Hackman (59th, 21:00), Nathan Koch (62nd, 21:07) and Andrew Wheeles (73rd, 21:45.72) followed.

Trinity’s A.J. Goecker was fifth in 17:38 while teammate Jacob Sabotin finished 104th in 23:44.

The host school won the girls’ competition, as BNL scored 46 points, nine points ahead of second place Seymour. Brownstown’s 80 points was good for third place of seven.

Seymour’s Makenna Sunbury was the individual winner in 21:36.18, Lillian Sunbury got third in 22:36.95, Grace Rennekamp clocked 22:56.39 for sixth, Emily East was 22nd in 25:56.62 and Brett Kleber clocked 26:30 for 28th. The Owls’ Ashton Chase was in the lead partway through the race, but was forced to retire before finishing.

Kaleyn Johnson led Brownstown by finishing in 23 minutes. Shauna Drake placed 10th in 24:03, Claire Poulton was 15th in 24:58, Grace Garland got 24th in 26:02 and Kylee Wischmieer was 31st in 25:45 for BCHS.

Trinity’s Abby Hildreth timed 33:20.67 for 57th overall.

Goecker, Hildreth run in small school invite

SHELBY — Trinity Lutheran brought two runners to the Southwestern Invitational on Saturday.

Goecker’s time of 17:32.82 was good for fourth place overall in the boys’ race. Lapel’s Luke Combs topped the field of 197 by clocking 15:58.14.

In the girls’ race, Hildreth placed 132 of 150 with a time of 31:25.11. South Ripley’s Megan Cole was first in 19:40.18.

BOYS TENNIS

Trinity wins season-opener.

INDIANAPOLIS — Trinity Lutheran defeated Indianapolis Lutheran 3-2 to open its season on Monday.

The duo of Hunter Morgan and Cameron Gruenwald picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles while

In singles play, Noah Voelker came up with an 8-6, 6-2, 10-3 win  in the No. 3 spot.

Jace Crockett lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Pierce McCammon fell 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles for the Cougars.

The Cougars had multiple rain-outs last week, delaying the start of its 2018 season.

The victory also marked the inaugural win for first-year coach Clayton Engel.

Saints blank Cougars

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Lutheran scored three goals in the first half and went on to hand Trinity Lutheran a 7-0 defeat.

The Cougars fell to 0-3.
