Melvin Morton “Mel/Bunk” Weddell, age 94, of Medora, passed away on August 10, 2018, at Hoosier Christian Village, Brownstown.

Mr. Weddell was of the Methodist faith.

He graduated from Clearspring High School in 1942, joined the U.S. Navy and went to Great Lakes boot camp.

He graduated from Northwestern University and was then sent to the South Pacific radio school and attended officer’s training at Princeton University. Mr. Weddell was sent to the Philadelphia Navy yard and played left field for the U.S. Navy baseball team.

He served on the U.S.S. ABSD3 (Advanced Base Sectional Dock .3) and a second ship, which was the U.S.S. Taconic flag ship for the Amphibian Unit, both in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

After discharge, he rejoined his father in farming and poultry business.

In 1958, Mr. Weddell joined the Indiana State Police as an officer and retired in 1991 after 33 years of service.

Melvin was a member of the Medora Masonic Lodge 328, a life-time member of the American Legion Post 89 of Seymour, Trooper’s Association, Indiana Trooper’s Alliance, and Carr Township Conservation Club.

He enjoyed hunting and has a deer registered in the Pope & Young record book.

Born on May 8, 1924, in Medora, he was the son of Ralph and Mabel Brown Weddell, both of whom preceded him in death.

On October 16, 1948, in Brownstown, he married Nellie Reynolds and she resides in Medora.

Survivors also include two daughters: Brenda L. Weddell and Janice (Larry) Claycamp, both of Seymour; two sisters Joann Smith and Jane Crockett; sister-in-law, Mary Hackman, brother-in-law, Charles R. Fowler; three grandchildren, Lisa (Daniel) McGaha, Brian (Michele) Claycamp and Lora (Brent) Waskom; and 10 great-grandchildren, Griffin McGaha, Riley McGaha, Christina Claycamp, Cassandra Claycamp, Charles Claycamp, Owen Ballard, Eli Ballard, Mackenzie Waskom, Morgan Waskom and Amelia Waskom.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by brothers-in law, Howard Smith, Paul Crockett, Hubert Hackman and Mervin Robbins, and sisters-in-law, Betty Fowler Mills, Loretta Mikel and Rosalie Robbins.

Funeral services for Melvin Morton “Mel/Bunk” Weddell will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 15, 2018, at Spurgeon Funeral Home Inc., Brownstown, with Timothy Weddell officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 14, 2018, at Spurgeon Funeral Home Inc., Brownstown, and from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

A masonic service will be conducted at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, at Spurgeon Funeral Home Inc., by Medora Lodge 328.

Burial will be at White River Valley Cemetery, Medora.

Military honors will be presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled American Veterans 47 and Vietnam Vets 7.
