Police believe the person who shot a 16-year-old girl late Wednesday used a high-velocity pellet gun.

One suspect has been cleared in the case, Seymour Police Chief Bill Abbott said Friday afternoon.

He said few details are available about who shot the girl as she was walking on Eighth Street between Park and Blish streets on the city’s northeast side.

The girl was shot on her right side below her arm and underwent surgery at a hospital in Indianapolis to remove the pellet, Abbott said. She is expected to recover, and the pellet will be released from the hospital as evidence, he added.

Abbott said the investigation into the incident will remain open.

“Right now we’ve talked to everyone we can talk to and we don’t have any other persons of interest,” he said.

Abbott said everyone should be aware of their surroundings when they are out.

After the shooting, the girl walked to Seymour Middle School at 920 N. O’Brien St., where she met an acquaintance who examined her injury and called 911. Officers responded to the school shortly after the 911 call at 9:44 p.m. Wednesday.

Police believe the shooter intended to shoot her because there was a limited window of opportunity.

“It was a matter of seconds, probably,” Abbott said, adding it is not known whether the shooter knew the girl or if she was sought out.

“With the evidence at the scene, we believe it was a deliberate shot, but we don’t know if she was the intended target or if she was the target of opportunity,” he said.

Anyone with information about the case or suspicious activity should call the Seymour Police Department at 812-522-1234.
