Native nominated for Woman of the Year

INDIANAPOLIS

A former standout for the Franklin College women’s soccer team, Clare Lenart has been named the Franklin College nominee for the 2017-18 NCAA Woman of the Year.

Now in its 28th year of existence, the NCAA Woman of the Year program celebrates the accomplishments and of female college athletes across all three NCAA divisions. In 2017-18, more than 200,000 women are playing college sports, and the NCAA received a record 581 nominations for the prestigious award.

Lenart, a Seymour native, was an anchor for the Grizzlies during her senior season, starting all 18 matches while recording 19 points (seven goals, five assists) and helping Franklin win the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships.

She ended her career as one of the most decorated student-athletes in school history, finishing with 25 goals and 30 assists for 80 points, giving her the second most all-time in the history of the women’s soccer program. Lenart collected three First Team All-HCAC honors, a pair of United Soccer Coaches All-Region selections, and was named Second Team Academic All-America by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in 2017.

After completing her senior season, Lenart was named the recipient of the Jenny Johnson-Kappes Award as the most outstanding senior female athlete at Franklin College.

In the next step of the selection process, conferences will select up to two conference nominees from the pool of school nominees. The Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will then choose the top 30 honorees, 10 from each division, before narrowing the pool down to nine finalists.

The top 10 honorees from Divisions I, II and III, including the nine overall finalists, will be honored, and the 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year winner announced, at a dinner Oct. 28 in Indianapolis.
