Free school supplies, haircuts, resources available at Medora event

A Rock’n Ready open house is set for 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 3 at Medora Community Schools, 82 S. George St., Medora.

Students who will be attending Medora Community Schools in 2018-19 are invited to attend and should be accompanied by an adult 18 or older. All activities are free.

Donnetta Coats, Steve Blair and Jerica Raby will be providing haircuts.

Hygiene items, clothes and shoes will be in the clothes closet. Shoes will be available to those who sign up prior to the event. Parents may call the school at 812-966-2201 between noon and 3 p.m. to sign up. Ask for the after-school office. Those who don’t sign up prior to the event may sign up at the event. All shoes will be purchased on a first-come, first-served basis and as finances allow.

The following donations are being accepted to hand out at the event: Clothing (sizes 4T and up and clean and in style for students), socks (all sizes 4T and up), underwear (all sizes 4T and up), shampoo, soap, deodorant and money to cover the purchase of shoes for students.

Students will have an opportunity to pick out school suppliesĀ from 4 to 4:45 p.m. All school supplies will be provided by Jackson County United Way’s Rock’n Ready initiative. For 2018-19, all backpacks must be see-through. No other backpacks will be allowed. Mesh backpacks will be provided for every student.

Students who do not attend the event will receive supplies on the first day of school, Aug. 6.

A community resource fair from 4 to 5:15 p.m. will include a temp agency for parents to visit, the library doing a Plinko game, CareSource health and wellness material for families, Anchor House giving away iced cookies and United Way sharing information on health insurance.

Finally, a teacher meet-and-greet will be from 5:15 to 6 p.m.
