Fun Day at the Park is set for 3 to 6 p.m. July 15 at Bard Street Park in Crothersville.

The event will feature bounce houses, live music from The Lasting Hope and Wayne Deaton and Mulligan the clown. Food and drinks will be available purchase.

Donations upon entry to the event will be collected to benefit Maddex “Maddie” Elicio, a 22-month-old boy from Seymour who was involved in a near-drowning accident Aug. 13, 2017.

That evening during a family gathering, as the older children went outside to play, one of them accidentally left the back door open, and Maddie was able to get out. His mother was busy with his twin sister and didn’t realize he had gotten out.

One of Maddie’s siblings saw him climbing the ladder to the pool and attempted to get him down but wasn’t able to do so. She ran into the house to tell her parents Maddie was in the pool.

When his parents pulled him out of the water, his heart was not beating. Two police officers who were next door took him to the emergency room while giving him cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Maddie was stabilized at Schneck Medical Center before being airlifted to Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health.

The family learned he was without oxygen for 8 to 10 minutes. Because of the lack of oxygen to his brain, Maddie now has severe brain damage. The doctors said he most likely will not be able to walk, sit, feed himself and possibly not even be able to talk.

Maddie has since gone through treatment of hyperbaric oxygen therapy and one treatment of stem cell therapy. He has improved with these treatments and is now aware of his surroundings, smiles and even laughs.

Unfortunately, insurance does not cover the stem cell therapy. The family is working toward a second round of this very expensive treatment, so funds raised at this event will help the family. Checks may be made to Shamra Terry, Maddie’s grandmother who is responsible for his funds.
