Seymour places fourth, breaks records at girls HHC meet

BEDFORD — Seymour left the Hoosier Hills Conference girls track meet with two individual conference champions and a record setting relay champion on Tuesday.

The 4×800 meter relay team of Ashton Chase, Claire Loebker, Makenna Sunbury and Abby Voss finished in 9:50.63 to help the Owls place fourth as a team in route to breaking the school record. Seymour finished with 89.75 points and New Albany won the meet with 123.

“I knew we could go faster than our seed time, but I was thinking we would got about a 10:02 or 10 flat,” Seymour coach Spencer Sunbury said. “I wasn’t expecting to go 9:50. The girls were excited about that. They have been excited about that relay all season.”

Chase also won the 1,600 in 5:14.90. Oriana Morales took the 400 in 1:03.06 with her teammate Jessica Blevins following behind in second (1:03.93).

Paige Kestler placed third in the discus with a 112-throw and Makenna Sunbury placed third in the 3,200 (11:49.53).

“That was a gutsy race on Ashton in the 1,600,” Spencer Sunbury said. “She led the most of the race and there was a challenge there on the last turn, but she came back and finished real strong.”

The Owls other top finishes were fourth places in the 100 hurdles, 1,600, 800, 4×400 relay, long jump and the shot put. They also placed fifth in the 4×100, 800 and high jump.

Seymour finished the meet with 23 top-eight finishes.
