Lifesavers

Thumbs-up to Trooper Christopher Lockman of Seymour and Master Motor Carrier Inspector Mary Eglen of Cortland. The two received Life Saving Awards on April 27 during a ceremony at the Indiana State Government Center in Indianapolis. Lockman also was honored with a Silver Star for his efforts in saving the life of a man trapped in floodwaters on a Jackson County road on May 7, 2017. Eglen was honored for successfully administering the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge an object from a fellow diner’s throat, effectively saving her life. That incident occurred while Eglen, who works out of the Seymour truck scales on Interstate 65, was dining at a restaurant in Monrovia, California.

Great golfer

Thumbs-up to Seymour’s Paxton DeHaven who became the first student-athlete since 1999 to earn a second consecutive individual title in the Great Lakes Valley Conference championship Sunday at Fox Run Golf Club in Eureka, Missouri. The senior led the University of Indianapolis women’s golf team to a record-setting performance while capturing the team title. The Greyhounds combined for a final-round team score of 287 (-1) to finish at 886, setting new conference marks for lowest 18- and 54-hole scores at the league championship. The team also set a conference record for margin of victory, besting runner-up Missouri-St. Louis by 37 strokes. All five Greyhounds finished in the top 10, and four, including DeHaven, earned all conference accolades.

Celebrating Earth Day

Thumbs-up to Schneider Nursery Inc. for organizing an Earth Day event April 21. Employees with the nursery on U.S. 50 between Seymour and Brownstown designed the event to encourage people to take care of the environment and help them prepare for spring gardening.

Acoustic celebration

Thumbs-up to the performers and the volunteers who made the inaugural Crossroads Acoustic Fest in downtown Seymour on April 27 and 28 a success. The event featured 20 acts, including four musicians with local roots, Stephanie Lambring, Don Pedigo, Joe Persinger and John Whitcomb, playing at three downtown venues — Rails Craft Brew & Eatery, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 655 and the Jackson County Visitor Center. Some of the funds raised by the festival, which was organized by the live music committee of Seymour’s Vision 2025, will help support Southern Indiana Center for the Arts.

Reckless

Thumbs-down to motorists who drive recklessly, endangering not only themselves but other people.
