Braves senior enjoys playing doubles

On the court, Sydney Cockerham prefers to have a partner.

The senior has played doubles throughout her tennis career at Brownstown central High School.

“I like working as a team,” Cockerham said. “I like having a partner there that I can depend on and that someone has my back. Communication is very important. You have to really get a feel for your partner, and know what they’re capable of and know what you’re capable of, and know their strengths as well as their weaknesses.

“I usually play on the (left) side and use my backhand. It’s pretty important to get your serves in. I usually can (get my first serve in), but sometimes it’s a little tricky with the wind out there.”

Cockerham, who has been playing No. 2 doubles for the Braves this season, said there is an adjustment time when you start playing with a new partner.

“It takes a while, really,” she said. “Like if you’re not used to playing together at all it could take three or four practices, a couple of matches.”

She said you always want to get off to a good start with by winning the first set.

“It’s pretty important because if you win the first set then you’re fired up to go into the second set,” Cockerham said. “If you win the second set you’re fired up to go into the third, but you might be a little more discouraged in the second set if you lose the first.

“It’s always important to believe in yourself. If your partner doesn’t believe in herself you have to be that for your partner. You have to try and encourage her and tell her to keep her head up, and keep your head up. Just because you made a bad shot you shouldn’t throw away the game. It’s pretty important to be positive.”

Cockerham began playing tennis in sixth grade, and said a friend of hers encouraged her to give it a try.

This spring, Cockerham hopes for a winning season.

“I hope we can make it a little bit further in sectional, and just have a great season,” Cockerham said.

The senior has enjoyed attending BCHS.

“It’s crazy to think that it’s almost over,” Cockerham said. ” I’ve really enjoyed my classes. I think the teachers really do a good job connecting with the students, and I’ve had a great experience here.

“I’ll definitely remember the people I’ve played with, and I’ll remember my coach. I’ll remember all the good games we’ve had, and the things I’ve learned.”
