Bernetta Roselene Owens McGuire, 90, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away at Our Lady of the Valley Sullivan Center on Thursday, April 5, 2018. She was an active member of the St. Andrew’s and Roanoke Catholic School community.

Bernetta was born June 6, 1927, in Seymour. She graduated from Shields High School and earned a diploma in nursing from Louisville General Hospital.

She worked as a registered nurse in Kentucky, Kansas and Virginia and retired from Community Hospital. She was co-founder of the Roanoke chapter of Birthright and a member of Sweet Adelines.

Prior to moving to Roanoke, she resided with her family in Salina and Wichita, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her sisters, Doris Atkins, Mary Vahlkamp and Denzel Field; and brothers, William Owens and James Owens.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Jane McGuire of Wichita, Kansas, Michael McGuire, Mark McGuire and Owen and Tanya McGuire of Roanoke and Monica McGuire and Denzel McGuire of Arlington; 10 grandchildren; a wealth of great-grandchildren; and a plethora of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Oakey’s South Chapel in Roanoke. The funeral Mass will be at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Kevin Segerblom officiating. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Blue Ridge Women’s Center, 5034 Williamson Road NW, Roanoke, VA 24012.
