Brown promoted to Double-A

Former Seymour right-handed pitcher Zack Brown will begin his 2018 season playing with the Biloxi Shuckers.

The Double-A Shuckers, an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, are based in Biloxi, Mississippi.

The team announced the 25-man roster, featuring 14 pitchers, three catchers, five infielders and three outfielders, Tuesday.

The Shuckers play in the Southern League with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, Mississippi Braves, Mobile BayBears and Pensacola Blue Wahoos.

Brown, 23, played for the Class A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers before getting promoted to the A-Advanced Carolina Mudcats in 2017.

With the Mudcats, Brown went 3-0 in four appearances (all starts) and pitched 25 innings total. Playing for Carolina, Brown gave up 24 hits, six runs (all earned) and two walks while tossing 23 strikeouts.

He had an 2.16 ERA while limiting opposing batters to an average of .250.

With the Timber Rattlers, Brown went 4-5 in 18 mound appearances (13 starts).

Brown pitched 85 innings with 78 hits, 33 runs (32 earned), 84 strikeouts and an opposing batting average of .249 with Wisconsin.

In 2017, across the two teams, Brown finished with 107 strikeouts, 102 hits, 38 earned runs (3.11 ERA) and opposing average of .249 in 110 innings of work.

Biloxi’s season starts tonight and will go through September.

Owls football hosting youth event

Seymour High School football is welcoming all Seymour-area youth athletes to a night of fun and football for Owl Night Lights on Friday.

Participants will rotate through eight different stations that focus on position specific fundamental drills, including offensive and defensive line, linebackers, receivers, secondary, quarterback, running back, kicking and tackling.

Participants also will work through NFL Combine events and games of ultimate football.

The evening will conclude with dinner and autographs from the high school football players.

The event, open to first- through sixth-graders, will meet in the Seymour High School commons at 6 p.m., and pickup will be at 10 p.m.

The event is free, and those in attendance will get free pizza and T-shirts.
